Wow, that's just... wow.

The similarities between Snape and Holofernes is spot on and I love the contrast in expression between Bella and Judith. Peter's hand is cool too - haven't seen to many pieces of him with the silver hand.

Absolutely worth whatever insane amount of time you put into this.

Also yay Caravaggio - if you haven't seen any of his paintings in the canvas (so to speak) you need to - they're breathtaking.

Thanks so much!
My roommate actually reminded me about the silver hand- and now I'm definitely glad I put it in. Wasn't sure anyone would notice it, so kudos to you for paying attention :)

I don't think anything is worth the time I put into this. :P I started this the last time this challenge was offered, so... last january? Grand total I think I spent around 70 hours on this...

And I also haven't yet had a chance to see any of his work in person- it is most definitely a life goal, however. Caravaggio has been one of my favorite artists for years.

Oh that is just gorgeous, and a beautiful transition between the two as well. I especially love the crucio spiralling out of Snapes neck, and the green drape behind Bella is simply sublime.

Thanks!
I added the spiraly crucio bit as an afterthought and it is now one of my favorite parts of the painting. Glad you liked it too :)

Oh, wow, this is absolutley amazing. I have been obsessed with different versions of this painting since I was in highschool. I like Artemisia Gentileschi's version of it better than Caravaggio's, but you've captured everything I love about Gentileschi's version in your art - most notably the fierce determination on Bella's face, not at all squeamish like the Judith in the Caravaggio piece.

So, so much love.

Thank you!
I've been a Caravaggio fan since high school, so I suppose I'm a little bit biased, but I have seen the Gentileschi version before, and I do like it a lot. I agree with you on Judith's face in Caravaggio's version- I knew had to change it a lot to fit with Bella's personality. Glad you like how it turned out :)

that's awesome! I looked at your piece, and before even scrolling down, went, "that's got to be a Caravaggio." I love how unimpassioned Bella looks about the torture. Great stuff.

Amazing. So much detail. Great play of shadow/light. And the expressions!
No wonder it took you so much time! But it was worth it!!!

(Btw, anyone else see the Caravaggio movie by Derek Jarman? I recall it was really slashy... ;o) We watched it in art class, and suddenly it became quite... explicit... and everyone was like OMG. hehe.)

So you've been telling me for years (literally) to get a tablet, and the time has finally come that I do need one. Well, it's not required, but I'm apparently really bad at drawing with the mouse. Everyone says to get a Wacom - it looks like you're among them. What size drawing space do you recommend, and are Wacoms really the way to go? (I've been looking at the Wacom Bamboo.)

[info]rabidtolkienfan

January 21 2008, 22:47:06 UTC 4 years ago

I use an Intuos3, but I have heard good things about the Bamboo as well. I wouldn't recommend going any smaller than 6x8, which is what I use. I've never used anything other than Wacom, nor have I known anyone else who has used other brands, so I can't really tell you if its better...
And mouse drawing sucks. I know very few people who can do it well, not to mention it is far more time consuming.

Oh, that's really lovely!! You've captured the lighting perfectly! And it's very evident that you spent a lot of time on it - it's just wonderful!!

Thank you :) I'm really happy with the way the lighting turned out, myself. One of the reasons I love Caravaggio's work so much is his use of lighting, so I put a good deal of effort into doing it justice :)

Amazing job.

The lighting is perfect, and I love your interpretation of Bella.

She looks so calm about the horrible thing she's doing, but there is also a fierceness under her serene expression. Her dress is wonderful, too.

I also like the inclusion of Wormtail's silver hand.

Wow! I love how intricate this art is. Bella is so cold, the magic looks so simple, but Snape's expression of pain tells a different story. Plus, I love Peter's look, so eager and pleased, but also looks like it's nothing out of the norm. What a gorgeous art! Thanks for sharing!

I am staring at my computer stuttering. I am a terrible lurker when it comes to fan art, but I just had to say I love this. Bella's face, the detail on her dress, the folds of the cloth in the back ground, Snape's muscles and contorting figure, Peter's expression, his silver hand. Just wow. Bravo.

Extraordinary and well worth the amount of work! Bella's calm and focused expression, the delicate lace on her shoulders - she's an artist of pain. Pettigrew is amazingly abject, and the silver hand is the killer detail. And the spiralling Crucio...Great work!

That is incredible. You have done an amazing rendition of the Caravaggio. The shading on Snape's body especially is perfect. And all their expressions-Snape's agony, Bellatrix's coldness, and Wormtail's evil smirk. Really stunning.

This was a fantastic use of the painting! You know, I don't think I've ever seen the Cruciatus curse portrayed in artwork.
